Have you ever had the experience in a cinema where the credits roll, you adored the film you just watched, and one of your first thoughts is: I’m definitely going to watch this again! Film captures moments and makes them eternal. In life, when you experience moments you adore, you can’t relive them. Memories begin to fade. But, if captured in film, you can revive these moments, feel the emotions again, and relive the experience.
Your wedding day is one of the biggest occasions of your life. Naturally, you’ll make memories to last a lifetime and you’ll want to capture them in the most artistic way possible. This article will address the importance of wedding videography and answer the question, is wedding videography worth it? Through my lens of experience, I’ll highlight the difference between video and photographs, the different styles, the costs, and the big benefits of wedding videography. 3, 2, 1… let’s roll.
Benefits Of Wedding Videography
Look, I don’t want to dismiss the value of photography. My artistic spirit loves the format, and there is certainly an important place for photography when it comes to weddings. However, compare how many photos you remember, versus how many movies you remember.
Why is that the case? Film, and moving imagery, is all-immersive. It captures movement, sound, and atmosphere in a way that frozen images simply aren’t able to.
Because of its immersion, it pulls you into the day and reliving the moment is even brighter. There’s more emotional value, not only for you and your loved one but everyone who watches. This is particularly poignant for people who couldn’t attend. It gives them an opportunity to connect to the flow and the feeling of the day, rather than relying on their imagination to fill in the blanks.
Does that mean you should hire a photographer and ask a friend to shoot a few videos on their iPhone? Not quite. There’s a huge gap between homemade video and professional videography. I don’t see the latter as a fun added bonus, but essential personal art.
Why Hire A Wedding Videographer
Of course there’s a cost involved and the day is already expensive. There are practical and romantic considerations when deciding, is a wedding video worth it?
I see wedding videography as a necessity. When you walk away from your wedding, your cake will be eaten, your bouquet will wilt. But the things that will last are your love, your rings, your photos and your film(s) — these keepsakes endure and allow you to relax fully into the day, knowing it’ll be captured.
When you hire a wedding videographer, you’re essentially commissioning an artist to join the adventure and leave you with a work of art. Professionals know how to capture the special moments, how to work with light and the fast-paced environment, and how to make sure people are comfortable and authentic in front of the camera.
Plus, in the back-end, they have the skills of post-production to transform all the raw footage into a film worthy of the big screen.
Types Of Wedding Videography
If you’re new to the idea of wedding videography, you may not be familiar with the different formats. There is no one-size-fits-all.
There are candid documentary-style videos, which follow the day’s events chronologically. Other videographers love using their creativity to capture the story of the day, to build the image of romance. The pace and energy vary too — some like energetic hype videos, while others go for slow and romantic.
Together In Time always aims to reflect the personality of the couple. Stunning editorial-style wedding videography is captivating but if your vibe isn’t oozing charisma in front of the camera, then trying to force things won’t capture who you are. Personally, I always strive to create films that perfectly capture the personality of my clients and the experience of their wedding day – whether that’s a candid documentary style, stunning editorial, or a mix of both.
Musical taste, visual aesthetic, and artistic direction are also important factors to consider. When these elements work in harmony, they produce a product with an importance that can’t be overstated.
How Much Does Wedding Videography Cost?
Feeling convinced of the value of wedding videography? I thought you might be. The next consideration, aside from the romantic vision and artistic flair, is the cost.
Keep in mind that individual videographer’s rates vary, depending on experience, how much footage they shoot, how much work they do in post-production, and any additional extras. Here are two of my popular packages as an example:
- Adventures Film Collection
- Two filmmakers
- 7-9 minute final film
- 11 hours of coverage
- Raw ceremony and speeches included
- Cost: $5,800 inc GST
- Memories Film Collection
- One filmmaker
- 4-6 minute film
- 9 hours of coverage
- Raw ceremony and speeches
- Cost: $3860 inc GST
There are smaller scale options, too, including a one-hour romantic, pre-wedding shoot, at your favourite spots, ideally bathed in golden hour light. This is woven into a beautiful one-minute film and priced at $715 inc GST. The micro wedding package is ideal for smaller weddings, with three hours of coverage transformed into a minute-long film.
I always strive to be open and discuss the best option for my couples, and it’s good practice for a videographer to listen to all your needs, before guiding you in the right way and answering any queries you have in the process.
